Aggrieved workers ground flights at Kenya’s main airport

Flights were grounded at Kenya’s main international airport in Nairobi following a strike prompted by Kenya’s aviation workers union (KAWU) and Kenya Airways.

The development left hundreds of passengers stranded outside the international and domestic terminals of Jomo Kenyatta International Airport on Wednesday morning.

Flights had to be rescheduled for several hours later than their official take off time.

“Kenya Airways regrettably wishes to inform its customers and the general public that due to the illegal strike by Kenya Aviation Workers Union (KUWA), the airline will be experiencing disruptions in normal flight operations,” the company statement read.

It added that the “relevant stakeholders are already doing everything possible to restore operations at the airport.”

“We invite all guests to check on the Kenya Airways official social media platforms for regular updates on their flights. The airline also offers guests who are booked on KQ-operated flights today 6th March 2019 who would like to rebook or reroute their flights that this will be done at no cost.”

Speaking with reporters, Sebastian Mikosz, Kenya Airways CEO, said 24 flights had been delayed while two others diverted to other Kenyan airports.

The strike at the airport comes on the back of a labour dispute over contracts and job security between the KAWU and Kenya Airways.
