Some Nigerian football stars including Ahmed Musa, Leon Balogun and Asisat Oshoala have joined the protest against extortion and brutality by the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS).
Ahead of Nigeria’s friendly match against Algeria in Austria, some players took to their individual social media accounts to lend their voices against the activities of the police department.
In February, TheCable had reported how Tiyamiyu Kazeem, an assistant captain of Remo Stars FC better known as ‘Kaka’, was allegedly killed by a SARS operative in Ogun state.
The footballer was allegedly pushed out of the vehicle by the SARS operative, who had mistaken him for a suspected internet fraudster (Yahoo boy), before he was hit by an incoming vehicle.

The renewed protests against the police department started on Saturday after a video showing a man allegedly gunned down in Delta by operatives of the police unit went viral.
Other footballers who have joined the conversations about the #EndSARS campaign are Malang Sarr, a French footballer; Moses Simon, Shehu Abdulahi and John Ogu among others.
“The reasons for the #EndSARSProtests have just come to my attention via very disturbing images and tweets. It is never good when those charged with protecting the citizens are now terrorising, extorting, or even killing the same citizens. I support #EndSarsProtests #EndSars,” Balogun wrote.

“In a world where genuine love for ourselves seems to be so scarce, I sincerely pray that the right thing is done to put an end to the strife,” Musa tweeted.

The essence of law enforcement agents is to protect lives and properties of citizens. If the citizens they swore to protect are now their preys, then the purpose of its formation is defeated. #EndSARS #End BANDITRY Going on in the north#Togetherwestand💪
