Ajaero: FG must prioritise policy consistency in education sector

Joe Ajaero, president of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), says the federal government must prioritise stability and coherence in its educational policies to ensure progress.

Ajaero spoke at the 2024 International Teachers’ Day event in Abuja, organised by the Colleges of Education Academic Staff Union (COEASU).

The NLC president attributed the persistent HND/BSC dichotomy to policy inconsistencies, adding that technical education’s significance necessitates the continued relevance of HND programs.

He asked the ministry of education to prioritise budget allocation for facility development and job security.

Ajaero also advocated for a living wage exceeding the current N40,000 minimum wage, while promising to back demands for enhanced teacher welfare nationwide.

“We need a wage that will help everyone pay their bills,” NAN quoted Ajaero as saying.

“To achieve this, I recommend that COEASU collaborated with the ministry to secure a better budget from the national assembly.

“I also appeal to the ministry to address the concerns raised by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) and honour the agreement signed to prevent strike.”
