Lagos train accident: 102 casualties recorded, 32 discharged from hospitals

Akin Abayomi, the Lagos commissioner for health, says 32 survivors of the accident involving a train and a staff bus have been discharged from different hospitals.

On Thursday, a Lagos staff bus was crushed by a moving train at the Shogunle and Ikeja axis when the bus veered into the rail track.

Many passengers were injured in the accident and some were taken to the trauma centre of the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH).

TheCable had reported that two passengers died at the scene of the accident while another four were confirmed dead at the hospital.

The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) and the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) blamed the driver of the staff bus for the accident.

Giving an update on the incident, Abayomi, in a press conference on Friday, said the train-bus accident recorded 102 casualties, including six deaths.

He said all the patients were in stable medical condition.

The commissioner disclosed that 19 survivors were discharged from LASUTH while another five were discharged from the Toll Gate Trauma Centre, and eight from Orile-Agege General Hospital

He said the state government would cover the medical bills of all the victims of the accident.

“The accident recorded 102 casualties including six fatalities — two deaths at the scene of the accident and four at LASUTH,” Abayomi said.

“All victims of the accident with varying degrees of injuries including life-threatening conditions such as head and chest cases were admitted and treated at LASUTH.

“Twenty-five patients with moderate injuries were later referred to five general hospitals in Lagos for further treatment and to decongest LASUTH.

”People donated 256 voluntary units of blood and 40 units were transfused yesterday.”
