Akpeyi: I play games in my mind before getting onto the pitch

Daniel Akpeyi, Super Eagles and Chippa FC of South Africa goalkeeper, has disclosed that he plays games in his mind before the actual football games, and that this action usually gives him confidence on the pitch of play.

Speaking in a telephone conversation, Akpeyi said these ‘mind games’ have always been one of his strengths.

“No matter the outcome of a game, I played most of my games in my mind before the the actual games,” he said.

“All this tends to help me during the real game. No matter the outcome of the result of the game, I always prepare my mind that I want to go out there and play well, to have the best of the game.

“This usually gives me confidence going into any game. And I thank God for that, because it is not everyone that gets such opportunity and grabs it.”

The goalkeeper expressed his disappointment for Nigeria’s failure to qualify for the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

“It’s quite disappointing not to have qualified for the AFCON. No child will want to fail an exam after preparing for it.”

Recalling the decisive and vital goal he conceded in Alexandria, Egypt, he said: “It was one of those things. The goal area was crowded, players trying to make sure that the ball did not get into the net, but it happens. It was not deliberate.”

On the fierce competition for the Super Eagles number one position, Akpeyi, who said: “Well, I think it is the choice of the coach who determines who the number one should be.

“I can only do my best, to keep upping my performance and only hope for the best. If the coach chooses me, I am ready to be the number one for Nigeria.”
