Al-Kuwait SC have terminated the contract of John Mikel Obi, former Super Eagles captain, after just four months.

The club announced Mikel’s departure in a post on its verified Twitter account on Thursday night.

“Termination of the contract of the Nigerian John Mikel Obi,” the post read.

The 34-year-old joined the Asian club in July after severing ties with Stoke City in England.

The former Super Eagles captain has become a football journeyman since he left Chelsea FC in 2016, having won the UEFA Champions League, Europa League, two English Premier League and three FA Cup trophies with the London Club.

He joined China’s Tianjin TEDA for one season before returning to England and into the books of Middlesborough FC.

Turkey then called as he linked up with Trabzonspor but left the club and was snatched up by Stoke City.

Obi played at all national football levels in his international career for Nigeria.

He represented the Nigeria U-17 team at the 2003 FIFA World Cup and U-20 at the 2005 football Mundial. He then won the silver ball for the second-best player at the tournament (behind Lionel Messi).

He was also a key player for the team coached by the late Stephen Keshi that went on to win their third Africa Cup of Nations in South Africa in 2013.

He captained Samson Siasia’s U-23 squad that clinched the bronze medal at the 2016 Olympics in Brazil.

Obi retired from international football in 2019, after Nigeria won the AFCON third-place medal.
