Hyacinth Alia, governor of Benue, has awarded university scholarships to four students from the state who won the Indonesia-Nigeria bilateral debate competition.
The bilateral international debate competition was organised for basic education learners under the auspices of the President School Debate Nigeria (PSDN).
The Benue team was led to Jakarta, the capital city of Indonesia, on May 5 by Grace Adagba, chairperson of the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB).
The competition was held between May 6 and 11.

During the national competition in November, the Benue students came second behind Kwara, which was the overall winner, while Taraba came third
The three top teams represented Nigeria at the debate in Indonesia and debated on the topic “This house believes that it is in President Putin of Russia’s interest to pull out his troops from Ukraine’.
Speaking on Monday when he received the students at the government house in Makurdi, the state capital, Alia said his administration will not relent in prioritising education and development.

The governor commended the participants, adding that “his administration has set an exemplary path of excellence for the students to follow”.
He announced a cash reward of N4 million to each of the four students who participated in the competition.
He also gave N3 million cash reward to their coaches for supporting the students, while 10 laptop computers were given to their schools.
The students who participated in the competition were Sonia Aduba, Ogenyi Favour, Samuel Ochara, and Ruth Suurshater.
