Some protesters on Tuesday set fire to the palace of Daniel Abomtse, the Ter Nagi, and the Gwer-West LGA secretariat.

The incident followed protests over the killing of three personnel of the Benue Civil Protection Guards by suspected herders.

The unrest reportedly began after the herders invaded Gyaruwa community.

An eyewitness, who preferred anonymity, said the bodies of the victims were brought to Naka in the early hours of Tuesday, sparking protests that escalated into arson.

In a statement, Hyacinth Alia, governor of Benue state, condemned the attack and murder of the guards.

He said the guards were protecting the locals of On-MbaAondo, Tsambe-Mbesev ward of Gwer-West LGA of the state when the incident happened.

“We appreciate the deep rage and frustration that has led to the anxiety at Naka, the headquarters of Gwer-West, including the regrettable burning of the LG Secretariat and the palace of Ter Nagi by protesters,” the statement signed by Tersoo Kula, his chief press secretary, reads.

“While we empathize with the sentiments of our people, we advocate restraint and foresight in funneling this anger. Destruction of our own worth simply serves to frustrate the intentions of our government, which is devoted to building up peace and security in the state.

“We request all security organs to intensify their efforts in detecting and capturing the perpetrators. It is essential that these marauding herdsmen are brought to justice and dealt with the full wrath of the law.

“The security of our residents is paramount, and we will not rest until those culpable for this violence are held liable.”

The governor restated that his administration is committed to the security of lives and property.

“We are committed to protecting our communities from further attacks. We implore all citizens to stand vigilant and collaborate with security agencies in reporting unusual activities,” he added.
