Hyacinth Alia, governor of Benue, has sworn in Deborah Aber as the first female secretary to the state government (SSG).
The ceremony took place at the government house in Makurdi, capital of Benue, on Thursday.
Aber replaces Joseph Alakali, who tendered his resignation on Monday, citing “personal challenges”.
The governor said Aber’s appointment is a testament to the fact that he has confidence in the ability of the women of Benue.

Aber Serumun Deborah’s appointment is a testament to the confidence I and indeed this administration have in the abilities of the women of Benue,” Tersoo Kula, press secretary of the governor, quoted his principal as saying.
“We recognise the important roles women play in our society and this appointment reflects our determination to elevate merit and diversity in leadership.”
Alia said he is confident that the new SSG would ensure the effective coordination of government activities and drive policies that would lead to the sustainable development of the state.
