Ambode to renovate Lagos schools with N1bn

Akinwunmi Ambode, governor of Lagos state, on Friday said his administration has earmarked over N1billion for the renovation and supply of educational materials to all secondary schools in the state.

Speaking at the Epe area of the state while inaugurating Augustine University, a private university owned by the Catholic Church, the governor also said more teachers will soon be employed in government-owned primary schools

Expressing interest in the educational sector, Ambode disclosed that his administration is working towards resolving the lingering crisis at the Lagos State University (LASU).

“From my exposures, I have come to the conclusion that there is no greater form of preparation to manage change than through education,” Habib Aruna, his chief press secretary, quoted him as saying.

“There is no greater investment that the individual parent can make than investment in education of highest possible quality.”

Ambode said considering the population of Lagos, estimated at about 20 million, the state is “seriously in need of institutions of learning”, commending the church for establishing the school.

Earlier, in his briefing, Adewale Martins, archbishop of Lagos Catholic archdiocese, said the idea to establish the university was muted seven years ago.

Adewale, who thanked the government for providing the institution with necessary documents needed for the approval of license, said the church intends using the university to “take Catholic education to the next level in Nigeria”.

Augustine University brings the number of universities in the state to six – two public and four private.
