Amuneke hopes for better Eaglets outing in Chile

Golden Eaglets coach, Emmanuel Amuneke, expects a better outing from his team during the FIFA U-17 World Cup in Chile later in the year.

The Eaglets disappointed their teeming fans at the CAF U-17 championship in Niger Republic where they were beaten 1-0 by South Africa in the semi-final and 3-1 by Guinea in the third place match to finish fourth.

It ensured qualification to Chile, but Amuneke hopes for a better performance in the South American country.

“The effort we are putting is to ensure we have a better outing at the World Cup in Chile,” he said.

“The competition in Niger has opened our eyes to many things and now we have to adjust and make sure we are ready for the world.”

The failure to win the trophy in Niger is now in the past, but the former Super Eagles winger still offered his apology to Nigerians.

“I have to apologise to Nigerians for not winning the competition. The expectation was that we would win it but it just didn’t work for us and we are very sorry that we disappointed Nigerians,” he said.

“After we qualified for the World Cup, we set our targets to winning the competition but for some reason I would say luck was just not our side.”
