The Edo government has ordered the closure of the abattoir in Eyaen, Uhunmwode LGA of the state.

Stephen Idehenre, Edo commissioner for agriculture and food security, who announced the development on Friday, expressed reservations over the poor hygiene at the state-owned facility, describing it as an “emerging epidemic”.

Idehenre had paid a surprise visit to the abattoir, during which he described the condition of the place as an “eyesore”.

He berated the management of the facility over the poor conditions at the abattoir, and ordered the immediate sealing of the abattoir.

“The ministry has written severally to the management of the abattoir, but they disregarded the warnings,” he said.

“We must stop this emerging epidemic. It is clear that the meat from this place is unwholesome and unfit for human consumption.

“We can’t tolerate this. They must understand that there is a government in Edo state.
