Anambra CP orders detention of officers over alleged murder

Nnaghe Itam, commissioner of police in Anambra, has ordered the detention of members of a patrol team who allegedly killed a civilian along the Onitsha-Owerri road.

Chibueze Nwakor, a 29-year-old man from Owerre-Ezukala in Orumba South LGA, was shot dead near Sokoto road, in the Onitsha main market area.

The police is yet to disclose when the incident occurred.

Following the incident, Dorcas Nwakor, the deceased’s mother, petitioned Kayode Egbetokun, inspector-general of police (IGP).

In a statement on Wednesday, Tochukwu Ikenga, spokesperson of the Anambra command, said preliminary investigation revealed that a corporal among the patrol team was the suspect.

“CP Itam orders the detention of police patrol team members over the murder of an unsuspecting member of the public along the Onitsha-Owerri Road, Onitsha,” the statement reads.

“As preliminary investigation indicates among the patrol team, a police corporal was the suspect in the act.

“The CP directs the immediate transfer of the case to the state criminal investigation department, Awka, sues for calm and assures all that the command will ensure a thorough investigation into the case for justice to prevail.

“Further development shall be communicated.”
