The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) in Anambra says the law profession must be attuned to the Artificial Intelligence revolution.

NAN reports that the Anambra NBA took the position on Friday when it commenced its 2024 Bar Week themed: ‘The Emerging Role of Artificial Intelligence in Legal Practice’ in Aguleri, Anambra east.

While delivering his keynote address, Ikenga Oraegbunam, a professor, said AI has uses in law practice.

“Artificial Intelligence has come to stay; it is influencing every field of human endeavour, and it has become ever pervasive in our lives today,” Oraegbunam said.

“In the legal profession, AI has applications, a lot of companies in some countries have employed Robot Lawyers but in Nigeria there is no place for it including Robot Lawyers.

“This is because Robot Lawyers are not called to the bar, no record of obtaining LLB, no record of passing through law school, not on the roll call of lawyers, these are what qualifies you to practice law in Nigeria.

“We also need to introduce cyber law and return to the law school curriculum.

“Our lawyers and judges have to be updated while our students have to be introduced to these technologies early enough.”

On his part, Chijioke Ofoegbunam, chair of Otuocha bar, said Chukwuma Soludo, Anambra governor, should do something about the Otuocha judicial division which he described as not conducive.
