#AnambraDecides: Security operatives clash with gunmen in Ihiala LGA

A joint team of security operatives, earlier on Tuesday, clashed with gunmen in Ihiala LGA during the supplementary governorship election.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had suspended the collation of results for the November 6 governorship election, and said a supplementary poll will hold in Ihiala LGA before a winner can be announced.

Election was unable to hold in the LGA as some election officials deployed to the area on Saturday were attacked.

The gun duel on Tuesday took place at Mbosi Osumoghu, a boundary area between Anambra and Imo.

Security operatives comprising officers of the army, police, immigration, asked journalists to leave the area for their safety.

“We’ve been here for the past three hours exchanging fire with them. You better reverse and take a safer route,” one of the police officers said.

Meanwhile, in another development, there were reports of a shooting around the LGA headquarters, said to have led to the death of a resident.

But the Anambra police command has denied the development.

Nkeiru Nwode, police public relations officer for zone 13, said the report was untrue.

“We don’t have such report and I don’t think something like that happened,” she said.
