Another blow to illiteracy – OctaFX and Keeping It Real Foundation create more book corners

After bringing a similar venture to life last year, international Forex broker OctaFX and the humanitarian Keeping It Real Foundation joined forces again. Namely, they opened another chapter in their ‘Reading corners’ project. This year, eight locations—in the states of Katsina, Kebbi, Osun, Ebonyi, Jigawa, Edo, Lagos, and Rivers—were planned. Half of them already enjoy them.

Among them was a primary school in Musa Yar’Adua, Katsina State. The town has a population of 2,435. The project there became the de facto first opportunity for children to start their English language journey since there was no other place nearby to get the relevant books.

Another educational institution receiving a ‘Reading corner’ was Saint George’s primary school in Ofatedo, Osun State. The place accommodates 249 pupils but has had no library whatsoever until now. The ‘Reading corners’ arrived there just in time.

Although it started during this year’s Ramadan, the initiative is ongoing. Moreover, on 8 September, Nigeria celebrated ‘International Literacy Day’. This was the day OctaFX and KIR Foundation planted their 4th ‘Reading corner’—in an underprivileged school in impoverished Irepodun, Lagos State.

Currently, those four ‘Reading corners’ that have already seen the light of day contain 150 books each.

According to the organisers, the straightforward reason for setting up those ‘Reading Corners’ is to provide learning opportunities for disadvantaged children across the country.

KIR Foundation’s mission is to transform the lives of vulnerable children, teenagers, people with disabilities, prison inmates, women and Nigeria’s local communities as a whole by using methods and tactics of furthering education, advocacy, and the general U.N. principles of Sustainable Development. Since the project’s start in 2011, they have helped donate over 26,000 books in twelve states in the countries of Nigeria, Ghana, and Abuja. The KIR Foundation has several partners, with whom they organise the ‘Reading corners’ project. A few weeks ago, the 50th such book reading corner was established in Bauchi State—soon to scale up to a hundred.

It’s no coincidence that the KIR Foundation and the Forex broker have been frequent partners as of late. OctaFX is relentlessly on the lookout to collaborate with top-notch participants from the social and humanitarian domains. Their most recent collaboration was the Youth Employability Skills (YES) Project—a charitable project that provided fifty unemployed youths with much-needed ICT training.
