Again, Nigerian drug offender to die in Indonesia

Less than two months after the Indonesian government executed of two Nigerians found guilty of drugs offences, the government is set to execute another Nigerian for the same offence.

Muhammad Prasetyo, the Indonesian attorney-general, says preparations of the execution site have been concluded as four foreign convicts will be transferred to Nusakambangan Island’s maximum-security prison facilities this week.

According to Daily Mail, nine foreigners, including a 45-year-old Nigerian, Raheem Salami, have been arraigned for execution, .

In January, two Nigerians, Solomon Okafor and Daniels Enemuo, were executed alongside an Indonesian national for drug offences.

Others up for execution with Salami are Andrew Chan, Myuran Sukumaran, Mary Jane Fiesta Veloso.

Meanwhile two other Nigerians who have been declared for execution are also set to face a firing squad after clemency requests from the Nigerian government was rejected by Indonesian president Joko Widodo.

They are 39-year-old Silvester Nwolise and Okwudili Oyatanze, whose clemency request by the Nigerian government was rejected. Both men were caught running drug transactions even from behind bars!

Widodo has received phone calls from some foreign leaders pleading for cancellation of the executions, but he turned down the requests, vowing not to grant mercy to drug offenders because Indonesia is suffering a “drug emergency”.

Tony Abbott, the Australian prime minister, has called on Indonesia to return a favour by sparing two convicted Australians, remembering Australia’s role in Indonesia after the 2004 Tsunami.

In 2004, Australia granted $1 billion aid package to Indonesia after the Tsunami, to help the country stabilise after the disaster.
