APC adopts direct primary to nominate candidate for Kogi governorship election

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has adopted the direct primary election mode to pick its candidate for the gubernatorial election in Kogi state.

The party chose the direct primary which allows party members to vote for their preferred candidates at the wards after a court nullified the delegates list that was meant to be used for nominating a flag bearer.

The court voided the congresses that produced the delegates for not complying with the electoral act.

Before then, the Abubakar Audu-Faleke political group in the APC had rejected the delegates system and opted for a direct primary election.

In a letter addressed to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Abubakar Kyari, acting national chairman of the APC, said after the exercise, there would be a special congress to ratify the candidate with the highest votes.

“We refer to our earlier letter dated January 25th, 2023, with reference no: APC/NHDQ/INEC/19/023/191,” NAN quoted Kyari as saying in the letter.

“However, our great party, the APC, has reviewed the modalities for the conduct of the gubernatorial primary election in Kogi.

“And has, therefore, resorted to adopt the direct mode of the primary election instead of the indirect mode as earlier communicated.”
