APC group to Tinubu: Review your appointments to reflect national spread

A group known as the Progressives Change Ambassadors of Nigeria (PCAN) has expressed dismay at the appointments made by President Bola Tinubu since he took over the reins of the country’s leadership in May.

In an open letter to Tinubu on Tuesday, Abdulkareem Ubaydah and Muhammad Rabiu Awwal, PCAN’s executive director and secretary, alleged that there is an imbalance with Tinubu’s appointments because the appointees mostly hail from the south-west.

They said this has led to feelings of “alienation and resentment among Nigerians from other parts of the country”.

“While we understand that you are entitled to appoint people you trust and believe in, we as stakeholders in the political party under which you assumed office as President of Nigeria, reserve the right to urge you to consider the importance of national unity and inclusiveness in your appointments,” the letter reads.

“It is important to always remember that you are the president of all Nigerians, not just that of Yorubas of the south-west geopolitical zone.

“Your political appointments should therefore reflect the diversity of our nation and ensure that all Nigerians have a voice in your government.

“Unfortunately, your appointments to date have fallen far short of this standard.

“For instance, control of Nigeria’s economy has been ceded exclusively to south-west Yorubas as all appointments in that sector have been filled by them.”

They asked Tinubu to reconsider his approach to political appointments.

“One of the duties of the President is to ensure that the government is representative of the people,” the statement reads.

“By appointing people from all geopolitical zones, you will be fulfilling this duty and living up to the oath you took as president.”

They said this is the only way Nigerians from different parts of the country would be able to contribute their bit to ensuring that Tinubu succeeds.
