APC records clean sweep of Nasarawa council poll

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has won all 13 chairmanship positions in the Nasarawa LG elections which held on Saturday.

Ayuba Wandai, chairman of the Nasarawa State Independent Electoral Commission (NASIEC) and the election’s returning officer, announced the results on Sunday at the commission’s headquarters in Lafia.

Wandai said APC’s councillorship candidates won 140 of the 147 electoral wards, while opposition parties secured just seven seats in the polls.

“Candidates of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) won one seat in Akwanga, four in Nassarawa-Eggon, while Zenith Labour Party (ZLP) won two in Doma Local Government,” NAN quoted Wandai as saying.

The NASIEC chair added that nine political parties fielded candidates in the council elections.

In a statement, Mohammed Aliyu, secretary to the state government, announced that Abdullahi Sule, Nasarawa governor, will swear in newly elected LG officials on Monday.

The SSG said the ceremony will take place at 8:30am at the late Aliyu Akwe Doma Banquet hall in the government house.

“Dignitaries expected at the event include the Rt. Hon. Speaker, Principal Officers, and Members of the Nasarawa State House of Assembly, as well as top judicial officials such as the Hon. Chief Judge of Nasarawa State, the Grand Kadi of the Sharia Court of Appeal, and the President of the Customary Court of Appeal,” he said.

“Other esteemed guests invited include Members of the State Executive and Security Councils, the State Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Special Advisers, Head of the Civil Service, Chairman of the Civil Service Commission, Permanent Secretaries, CEOs and Members of Commissions, Boards, and Parastatals, Senior Special Assistants, the Chairman of the Nasarawa State Council of Chiefs, top Government appointees, Directors of Personnel Management of Local Government Councils, and Members of the Press.”

Aliyu added that guests are expected to take their seats by 8:00am.
