Nuhu Ribadu’s appointment as National Security Adviser in June 2023 signalled a renewed dawn in Nigeria’s security landscape. Recognizing the enormity of the task, Ribadu assured Nigerians that his goal was to restore peace and order, bringing it in line with other secured nations worldwide.

As a seasoned security expert,  Ribadu was prepared for the job and meant every bit of what he said. He was armed with his extensive experience as a retired Assistant Inspector-General of Police and former Executive Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). His illustrious career equipped him with in-depth knowledge of Nigeria’s internal security architecture and the intelligence-gathering expertise required to combat crime and insecurity.

Nigeria, Africa’s largest economy and most populous nation, faced unprecedented security challenges before Ribadu took the reins. The country was plagued by incessant attacks on vulnerable targets such as schools, religious centres, and government institutions.

In the North-East, Boko Haram insurgency had taken hold, spreading terror and destruction throughout the region while bandits and kidnappers roamed freely in the North-West, targeting innocent civilians and extorting ransom. In the South, security personnel were frequently attacked, making it a challenging environment for law enforcement. The Federal Capital Territory was not spared. Criminals unleashed terror at will without consequences.

The situation was dire, and Nigeria needed a strong, experienced leader to turn the tide. Then, enter Ribadu, a fearless man who has demonstrated his ability to tackle complex security challenges. His focus on strengthening security institutions, enhancing regional and international cooperation, and addressing illicit arms proliferation has brought renewed hope in the area of security to the country. In 2023, the Office of the NSA entered into a partnership with the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) and the German Embassy in Nigeria for the roll-out of a comprehensive police reform program that will support the work of the Special Presidential Committee on Police Reform.

Ribadu also emphasizes the importance of intelligence gathering, surveillance, and strategic communication in preventing and combating security breaches. Additionally, he advocates for innovative solutions to address the evolving threats Nigeria faces. Ribadu’s engagement with global partners demonstrates his commitment to regional and international cooperation.

He also recognizes that security is not solely the responsibility of the government. He advocates for community-based initiatives that promote peace, understanding, and cooperation. This involves engaging traditional leaders, community groups, and civil society organizations in security efforts.

Ribadu’s tenure as National Security Adviser has been marked by significant achievements in Nigeria’s security landscape. His strategy combines military, political, and socio-economic initiatives, emphasizing cross-border cooperation, youth empowerment, and local institution reinforcement.

Ribadu’s approach has yielded notable results. In the Niger Delta region, crude oil production has witnessed a steady increase. Over 40 police stations destroyed by criminals in the South-East have been rebuilt and reactivated. Key bandit leaders have been eliminated, and many others arrested in the North-West. Notably, Halilu Sububu, Abubakar Mainok, Haruna Isiya Boderi, and Kachallah Damina are among the terrotist neutralized by troops.

The North-East, once ravaged by terror, is now experiencing stability and reconstruction efforts. Farmer-herder clashes in the North-Central region have considerably reduced. Since Ribadu assumed office in June 2023, the Nigerian government has secured the release of over 4,600 hostages, neutralized more than 9,000 terrorists, bandits, and kidnappers, and arrested over 7,000 others. Large quantities of assorted weapons and ammunition have also been recovered.

Ribadu has ensured swift rescue missions for abducted children and citizens. The rapid responses to rescue operations, from the freeing of the Kuriga schoolchildren to the release of students abducted from the Federal University of Gusau, and the rescue of Kogi students coordinated by ONSA, will go down in history as defining moments of Ribadu’s first year as NSA.

To neutralize economic threats to Nigeria’s sovereignty, Ribadu participated in operations to enforce action against culprits, particularly Binance, a serial offender in several countries, in accordance with the nation’s laws. Pursuing offenders with links to trans-border terrorism is familiar terrain for him, aided by his distinguished international network and reputation.

Ribadu has utilized his international networks to track trans-border terrorists and their financiers. The NSA has fostered collaborations both domestically and internationally. He has ensured seamless coordination within Nigeria’s armed forces. With 25 years of police experience, Ribadu prioritizes interagency coordination and collaboration across a diverse group of law enforcement personnel—often across borders—to achieve success in his pursuit of fraudsters and cybercriminals

Nuhu Ribadu’s first year as National Security Adviser has been a game-changer for Nigeria’s security landscape. His leadership and vision have brought hope to a nation once plagued by insecurity. The task ahead remains daunting, though. Ribadu must maintain the momentum, pushing forward with his comprehensive strategy to consolidate gains and address emerging threats.

The road to lasting peace and security is long and arduous. Ribadu’s success thus far is a testament to his unwavering dedication and expertise. However, he cannot do it alone. The Nigerian people, civil society organizations, and the international community must rally behind him, providing unwavering support and cooperation.
