The Arewa Youth Consultative Movement (AYCM) says the reintroduction of petrol subsidy would “jeopardise” the country’s economy.

Protesters in the country have asked President Bola Tinubu to restore petrol subsidy and address the economic hardship facing Nigerians.

Addressing a press conference in Kaduna on Saturday, Kabiru Yusuf, AYCM’s national president, said the decision to remove petrol subsidy was taken in the interest of Nigeria.

He commended efforts by the federal government to fix the Warri, Port Harcourt and Kaduna refineries to meet local demand.

“The decision to eliminate the oil subsidy was taken in the interest of the nation’s collective welfare,” he said.

“However, it has inadvertently led to a surge in prices of essential goods and food items, triggering protests and unrest, with some individuals and politicians exploiting the situation to advocate for a change in government, solely based on President Bola Tinubu’s Southern origin.

“We make bold to declare that President Bola Tinubu remains resolute in forging collaboration and engagement with all stakeholders, including the youth, to realize the vision of a prosperous Nigeria.

“The ongoing refurbishment of the three refineries underscores the government’s commitment to ensuring efficient domestic petroleum supply and meeting the nation’s energy needs.”

The AYCM national president further condemned recent calls for  Godswill Akpabio’s resignation as the senate president.

“Senator Godswill Akpabio’s crucial role is facilitating governance, promoting national development, and seeing Nigeria as one indivisible nation,” he said.

“The call by [sections of the] north for Senator Godswill Akpabio to resign despite his legacy is cross-prejudice and unhealthy to our polity.”
