Army gives special promotion to 6,199 soldiers fighting Boko Haram

Tukur Buratai, chief of army staff, has approved the special promotion of 6,199 soldiers serving in Operation Lafiya Dole.

Sani Usman, army spokesman, who disclosed this in a statement on Tuesday, said the soldiers were promoted to ranks between lance corporal to warrant officer.

“The breakdown of the beneficiaries of the special promotion are as follows: staff sergeants – warrant officers –329; sergeants – staff sergeants –371; corporals – sergeants –707; lance corporals – corporals –1,290, and privates – lance corporals –3,502,” he said.

“The COAS congratulates the beneficiaries and urged them to increase the tempo of  the ongoing clearance operations of the Boko Haram terrorists in the north-east.”

Hundreds of soldiers fighting Boko Haram have been killed in battle in the north-east. Abu Ali, a war hero, was killed by Boko Haram insurgents in November 2016. He was promoted posthumously from lieutenant colonel to colonel.
