Army offers olive branch to Boko Haram insurgents

Lucky Irabor, a major general and the theatre commander, operation Lafiya Dole, has called on members of the Boko Haram sect to surrender.

Irabor made the call while speaking at the foundation laying ceremony of the Nigerian Army Officers Wives Association (NAOWA) nursery school and a day care centre at the Maimalari barracks in Maiduguri, Borno state capital.

He said those who failed to surrender would pay the price for being stubborn.

“I will like to use this opportunity to encourage those of them who have made up their minds to surrender, that now is the time for them to do so, because the olive branch is being offered to them,” he said.

“But where they fail to take the olive branch, they will pay the price for stubbornness. We will ensure that they are uprooted out of the entire area in a short while.”

The theatre commander said the military was determined to uproot the insurgents from the north-east.

“We are pleased with the socio-economic activities that are returning in the north east, that is what had actually fired us up to ensure that we chase the criminals out of the place,” he said.

Irabor commended the NAOWA leadership for initiating the project, describing it as “laudable”.
