Army rescues abducted Chibok schoolgirl with two kids in Borno

The Nigerian army says it has rescued one of the Chibok schoolgirls abducted by insurgents in 2014.

Shuaibu Waidi, general officer commanding the 7 division, identified the girl as Rejoice Sanki while presenting her to journalists in Maiduguri.

Waidi said troops of the 21 armoured brigade in Borno rescued Sanki and her two children.

“On October 2, Rejoice Sanki, who is number 70 on the list of Chibok girls, was rescued with her two children by troops of 222 battalion in Kawuri area,” he said.

Waidi added that the girl is currently undergoing medical examination with her children and would be handed over to the Borno government.

Two weeks ago, Yana Pogu, another Chibok schoolgirl was rescued by Operation Hadin Kai of the Nigerian Army in Borno.

Pogu was rescued “alongside her four children… months after giving birth to a set of twins”.

Within the last five months, 13 Chibok girls have been rescued by the military.

Out of the over 200 girls abducted by the terrorists in 2014, about 96 are still in captivity.

In a related development, Christopher Musa, theatre commander of north-east joint Operation Hadin Kai, announced the opening of a new camp for repentant Boko Haram members.

Musa spoke to journalists in Maiduguri, the state capital.

He assured that the new camp is in a safe area where the military could secure it.

“Based on the assessment, we looked at the areas that can be properly defended,” Musa said.
