Arsenal beat Manchester City in penalty shootout to win Community Shield

Arsenal have won the FA English Community Shield after beating Manchester City 4-1 on penalties following a 1-1 stalemate at Wembley on Sunday.

In the traditional curtain raiser for the new English Premier League (EPL) season, a sluggish Man City were punished by Arsenal.

Cole Palmer had scored for Man City before Leandro Trossard’s last-gasp equaliser forced penalties where the Gunners triumphed. The latest Community Shield win is Arsenal’s 17th, putting them second on the all-time winners list behind only Manchester United.

Arsenal have also won the Shield in the last five appearances, while Man City have appeared in the past three editions and lost on all occasions.

Man City had Erling Haaland in attack but left Kevin de Bruyne and Ederskn Moraes on the bench, while Arsenal started Declan Rice, Kai Havertz and Jurrien Timber, their big-money summer recruits.

Mikel Arteta’s Gunners were better in the first period and had clear openings through Kai Havertz to take the lead but fluffed their lines.

Man City however took the lead on 77 minutes when Palmer danced towards the penalty area before curling a shot into the top corner.
