AT A GLANCE: 2016 Oscar winners

The Annual Academy Award commonly known as the Oscars held on Sunday to celebrate the best movies of the past year.

Unlike past editions, the 88th edition had its fair share of controversies, which arose as a result of the absence of black actors and actresses in the nomination list and led to calls to boycott the event by black performers.

Hosted by Chris Rock, African-American comedian and actor, the event took place at Dolby Theatre at Hollywood & Highland Centre with the performer calling for representation of black people in the industry.

It was a memorable night for British actor Leonardo Dicaprio, who won his first Oscar after six nominations since he began his career in 1990.

Brie Larson, American actress and singer, also won her first Oscar award as the best actress after 18 years of acting.
