A student has been reported dead and four others injured after a classroom corridor collapsed at Government Girls Science and Technical College (GGSTC) in Potiskum, Yobe state.
The incident, the NTA in Yobe reports, happened around noon on Thursday as students prepared for their lunch break.
Channels TV quotes Bukar Aji, the permanent secretary of the ministry for basic and secondary education, as saying the injured students, all in SS2, are receiving treatment at a specialist hospital in Potiskum.
One of the victims was, however, said to have passed away from their injury.

Aji said the state’s ministry of housing and urban development has been asked to investigate the cause of the collapse.
The GGSTC incident is the latest among reported building collapse cases affecting schools in Nigeria.
In July 2024, a two-story school building hosting the Saints Academy College in Jos, Plateau state, collapsed during morning classes.

The incident led to the deaths of at least 22 students and trapped over 100 others.
These cases have often been attributed to poor construction practices, the use of substandard materials, and inadequate enforcement of building regulations.
In mid-2024, the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) said it was moving to crack down on substandard school building construction across the country.
The commission was to work with the Nigeria Building and Road Research Institute (NBRRI) to deploy a team that would monitor quality control for school-related building constructions.
