Former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar has mourned the passing of Ayo Adebanjo, the factional leader of Afenifere.
The elder statesman died on Friday at his residence in Lekki, Lagos, at age 96.
Atiku described Adebanjo as a “formidable force and a fearless fighter” who played a pivotal role in Nigeria’s transition to democracy.
The former vice-president praised the deceased for his unwavering commitment to justice, equity, and good governance, adding that he was one of the last remaining nationalists who dedicated his life to the progress of the country.

“I am saddened by the news of the passing away of Chief Ayo Adebanjo, a foremost elder statesman and one of the few remaining nationalists of our country,” he said.
“I can vividly recall the heroic role that Pa Adebanjo played in wresting power from the military and enthroning democratic governance in Nigeria. He was at the forefront of the fight against military dictatorship.”
Atiku acknowledged Adebanjo’s fight for justice and equality, saying he inspired multiple generations, mentored civil rights advocates, and fought oppression until his final days.

“It is on record that Pa Adebanjo spent his entire youthful days fighting against colonial rule; spent his middle age to fight against military dictatorship and his latter days to ensure that good governance, rule of law and democracy took firm roots in Nigeria,” he said.
“I wish to state without equivocation that Pa Adebanjo was a golden example of how to live and die for the good of the country.
“Apart from mentoring many generations of civil rights activists across different generations, Pa Adebanjo was an activist extraordinaire and bridge builder who led the battle against injustice and oppression from the trenches
“Undoubtedly, the life and times of Adebanjo remain a priceless map for contemporary and upcoming activists, who advocate for good governance to learn and take a cue from.

“He taught all of us how to be statesmen of distinction.”
The former vice-president also condoled with the Adebanjo family and Ogun state, urging them to find solace in his legacy.

In his tribute, Peter Obi, former presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), said Adebanjo was one of the great minds who shaped his perception of Nigeria as a great country.

The former Anambra governor described Adebanjo as a pillar in the struggle for a new Nigeria, calling his death “a profound loss to Nigeria and to all who cherish justice, equity, and truth”.
“I remain deeply grateful for his support during my presidential campaign. His endorsement was not merely a political gesture but a testament to his belief in the ideals of equity and inclusiveness,” he said.

“He stood firm in his convictions against all odds, demonstrating his dedication to the greater good of Nigeria.
“The last time I spoke with him, his words left a lasting impression: “Always stand on the path of justice.”

“That advice remains a guiding principle in my life, and I reaffirm my commitment to upholding it in honour of his memory.

In a condolence message, Kayode Fayemi, former governor of Ekiti state, described the deceased as a man who spent his life committed to fairness and democratic ideals in the face of adversity.
The ex-governor said the demise was a great loss not only to the Yoruba nation but to Nigeria as a whole.
“I am deeply saddened by the passing of Chief Ayo Adebanjo, foremost nationalist and leader of Afenifere,” Fayemi said.
“This is a great loss not only for the Yoruba nation but for Nigeria as a whole. Pa Adebanjo was a true icon of Nigeria’s democratic struggle, an unwavering advocate of justice, and a pillar of progressive politics in Nigeria.
“Baba was more than a political leader; he was a moral compass who never wavered in his convictions.
“As a committed nationalist and a leading voice in Afenifere, he stood for fairness, justice and the restructuring of Nigeria to ensure a more equitable society.
“His principled courage, wisdom, and steadfastness in speaking truth to power made him an enduring figure in our national political landscape.
“While we grieve his loss, we also celebrate a well-lived life dedicated to pursuing a better Nigeria.
“His legacy will remain an inspiration for those of us who believe in the principles he championed.”
Fayemi also extended his condolences to Adebanjo’s family, the Afenifere leadership, and all Nigerians who are beneficiaries of his leadership and goodwill.
