Atletico Madrid have been crowned La Liga champions, as Diego Godin’s header ensured a 1-1 draw away to Barcelona.
Not since 1951 had the League title been decided on the final day of the season by two clubs facing each other. But that was exactly what would happen at Camp Nou, with Atleti knowing that a point would see them become champions for the first time in 18 years.
Striker Diego Costa went off injured for Atletico early on and Barcelona capitalised as Alexis Sanchez smashed in a superb opener.
Atletico came out strong in the second half as David Villa hit the post before Diego Godin headed in the equaliser.
Barcelona would have won the title with a win and Dani Alves went close with a fierce drive, but Atletico held on.

The draw meant Atletico finished first with 90 points, three ahead of Barcelona.Atleti’s title was cemented by an amazing 1-1 final day of the season draw at Barcelona: a result which the Rojiblancos pulled off despite having influential forwards Arda Turan and Diego Costa subbed off in the first half.
Atletico now stand on the edge of a historic double if they can beat Real Madrid in the Champions League final next week.
