Taiwo Awoniyi has been tapped as the replacement for Terem Moffi ahead of the Super Eagles‘ upcoming 2022 FIFA World Cup double-header qualifying games against the Central African Republic (CAR).

Last week, Gernot Rohr had named an initial list of 23 invited players for the matches.

The Franco-German was then forced to adjust the list almost immediately after Alex Iwobi was ruled out of the clash due to injury — with the Everton midfielder replaced with Moffi.

However, Moffi was also forced off injured during FC Lorient’s Ligue one encounter against Clement Foot on Sunday.

Awoniyi’s invitation was announced in a post on the Super Eagle’s verified Facebook page on Sunday night — shortly after he scored a second-half brace in Union Berlin’s 2-1 comeback win over Mainz 05 in the Bundesliga.

“Awoniyi called up to replace injured Terem Moffi for the WCQ versus the Central Africa Republic. Get well soon, Terem,” read the post.

Awoniyi is in a red-hot form currently, having scored eight goals in 12 games in all competitions for Union Berlin this season.

The Super Eagles will take on CAR at the Teslim Balogun Stadium Lagos on October 7 before facing the same opponent three days later in Douala.

The games will be the team’s third and fourth matches of the qualifiers, after defeating Liberia and Cape Verde in the opening encounters to remain top of the group.
