Bakers to protest at n’assembly over ‘imminent collapse’ of business

The Association of Master Bakers and Caterers of Nigeria (AMBCN) say they will embark on a peaceful protest on Tuesday.

In a letter addressed to Nyesom Wike, minister of the federal capital territory (FCT), on Monday, AMBCN said the protest would be at all state government houses and the national assembly.

The association said the aim of the protest is “to drive home our demand to save the baking industry from imminent collapse which may add to the heightened security situation of our dear country”.

“This letter is therefore meant to serve as notice to all security agencies in Nigeria the planned peaceful protest by bakers on the said date which is suppose to be held across the nation on the said date 13th Feb. 2024,” the letter added.

Last week, a group of protesters under the umbrella of the Association of Women Gurasa Bakers staged a protest in Kano against the rising cost of flour.

Gurasa is the name given to a kind of bread baked locally by women across northern Nigeria.

Fatima Auwalu Yar-Gurasa, leader of the association, appealed to President Bola Tinubu and relevant stakeholders to expedite action in providing succour by reviewing the high cost of flour.

Yar-Gurasa said the high cost of the commodity has become a setback for members of the association, noting that 50kg of flour is currently sold at N40,000 as against N17,000 a few months ago.

She warned that the continuous rise in the price of flour may run many of them out of business.
