Bale, Ronaldo, Kanté among nominees for 2018 Ballon d’Or

Real Madrid winger Gareth Bale and Juventus striker Cristiano Ronaldo are among the first 15 nominees for the 2018 Ballon d’Or award.

Bale and Ronaldo are joined by Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson, Madrid striker Karim Benzema and Paris Saint-Germain forward Edinson Cavani.

There are 30 names set to be announced throughout Monday.

For the last decade, Ronaldo and Lionel Messi dominated the sport, taking top prizes every year but their grip is starting to loosen.

Luka Modric has already won the 2018 FIFA Best player award and is an odds-on favourite to take the Golden Ball.

He’ll face stiff competition from the likes of Kylian Mbappe, Neymar and Antoine Griezmann.

The Ballon d’Or is considered the greatest personal accolade a player can achieve. The 2018 ceremony will take place in Paris on December 3.
