Bandits have killed nine operatives of the community protection guards (CPG), a state-owned security outfit, in Tsafe LGA of Zamfara state.

In a statement issued on Tuesday by Sulaiman Idris, senior special assistant to the state governor on media and publicity, the deceased personnel were killed in an ambush at a checkpoint on the outskirts of the town.

Idris said Dauda Lawal, the Zamfara state governor, has condemned the attack and described it as a barbaric act.

“I received the unfortunate report of an ambush by bandits in Tsafe LGA, during which nine of our brave CPG members were killed,” the governor was quoted as saying.

“The ambush by the bandits on our guards is a cowardly act as they were dispersed and on the run due to sustained troop’s onslaught across the state.”

The governor said the troops would continue the renewed onslaught to defeat bandits in the state and region.

“I want to take this opportunity, on behalf of the government and people of Zamfara, to extend my condolences to the families and loved ones of our brave guards,” he said.
