Bashir Ahmad: Why FG approved landing equipment for Katsina airport

Bashir Ahmad, personal assistant to President Muhammadu Buhari on new media, has explained why the federal government approved the installation of a category three instrument landing system (Cat 3 ILS) for Umaru Musa Yar’adua airport, Katsina state

The federal government had recently also approved the installation of Cat 3 ILS for Mallam Aminu international airport, Kano, and Port Harcourt international airport.

Fola Akinkuotu, managing director of Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA), noted that the federal government had approved the next phase of installation in the three airports, after the Cat 3 ILS project had been installed in Abuja and Lagos airports.

The Cat 3 ILS helps aircraft to land under zero weather visibility, including at nights and during bad weather.

On Saturday, Ahmad took to his Twitter handle to announce the development.

Reacting to the tweet, a Twitter user @KaitafiS queried the approval of the visibility landing equipment for Katsina airport, and why other airports in the northern part of the country were not approved for the project.

Responding, the presidential aide said the Katsina airport was approved because military operations in the north-west are coordinated from the Katsina airport.

“Maiduguri airport is one of the airports that received a total overhaul by this administration,” he wrote.

“Secondly, I am sure you know that all the military operations in the Northwest are being coordinated from Katsina airport. So it’s equally important for the airport to get the system.”
