The Network of Bayelsa Professionals (NBP) has asked the inspector-general of police (IGP) and other security agencies to ensure a violence-free election in the state.

In a statement on Friday, the group accused the All Progressives Congress (APC) of plotting to carry out violence during the November 11 election.

The group further alleged that Joshua Macaiver, deputy governorship candidate of the APC made utterances threatening to take victory “by force”.

Deinmobofa Tantua, the spokesperson of the NBP, said Bayelsa’s election has always been characterised by violence because of some “unguided utterances by politicians who have nothing to offer”.

“This time, we are raising the alarm of violent plans by the APC all in their desperation,” Tantua said.

“The running mate to Timipre Sylva, Joshua Macaiva, openly said during one of their rallies that they will ‘take it by force’.

“We cannot wave such threat aside. The antecedent of the man who made the threat is well known.

“We advise Macaiva and his principal to see how they can quash their disqualification by a federal high court and to also concentrate on how to clear his various cases in court which is also capable of putting him in more trouble.”

NBP urged the IGP and other security agencies in the country to come up with measures that would ensure the safety of lives, properties and votes of the people.

The group added that elections are not wars, adding that residents of Bayelsa remain vigilant and resist being intimidated by anyone both before and during the poll.

“That is also the message the governor has been preaching which has largely endeared him to the people.”
