The management of Benue State University (BSU), Makurdi, has suspended all medical students from 200 to 600 level for one month.
NAN reports that the notice of suspension is contained in an internal memo, signed by Mfaga Modom, the registrar of the university.
In the memo, Modom said all the concerned students of the college of health sciences should “proceed on a one-month suspension with effect from 8 a.m. on October 30 and resume on November 29”
On October 25, the students protested and occupied the Benue state government house over the alleged arbitrary withdrawal of their classmates, lack of water and overcrowding of up to five students in a room, instead of two.
The registrar said the school management reviewed the recent actions of the affected students and reports from relevant authorities regarding the demonstration to arrive at the decision.
She said the management also noted with “dismay the uncooperative attitude of the students before, during and after the demonstration”.
She said an investigative committee would be constituted to look into the remote and immediate causes of the demonstration and advise as appropriate.
“A top Management Committee of the College of Health Sciences is hereby directed to implement the Resolutions of the Reports of the various committees on the students’ demonstration,” the memo reads.
“The Benue State University Medical Students Association (BESUMSA) has also been suspended with immediate effect till further notice,”
The memo added that on resumption, each student should bring an affidavit from a competent court of law attesting to being of good conduct.
According to the document, each student should also come along with his parents or guardian who will sign an undertaking.
