Gasco Marine Limited (GML), a fully indigenous company and subsidiary of the Viathan Group, has been key in Nigeria’s natural gas industry since 2012. GML’s overarching vision, “To Unleash Africa’s Economic Potential through Gas Optimization,” drives the mission of “Fueling Africa’s Future” by promoting natural gas use and spearheading sustainability initiatives. Through this, Gasco aims to dominate the mid and downstream value chain, including natural gas distribution and compression, aligning with its commitment to reducing carbon footprints and fostering a greener environment.
A cornerstone of Gasco’s sustainability strategy is integrating renewable energy into its operations. For instance, the company has invested over billions of naira in CNG infrastructure. In 2019, Gasco built a 216,000SCM/day CNG plant (mother station) and invested in building a virtual pipeline of gas skids and trucks to deliver this CNG across Nigeria. Gasco currently delivers CNG in Ogun State, Oyo, Lagos, Kogi, and Kano, with more locations in the works. The indigenous company also pioneered long distance CNG delivery to Challawa in Kano from Kogi state, a distance of over 600km. Through innovation and adoption of cutting-edge technology, Gasco Marine was able to extend the traditional Virtual Pipeline reach from 200km to over 600km.
Additionally, Gasco has expanded its virtual pipeline fleet to the delivery of natural gas across Nigeria, including regions with limited pipeline infrastructure. The northern operations, which commenced in 2023, supplies CNG to industrial hubs in Kano and Abuja via a network of skids and trucks. In the past two years, Gasco has pioneered CNG for Haulage companies, providing refueling infrastructure for CNG trucks that transport goods across Nigeria. This reduces the cost of transportation as 1 litre equivalent of gas is more than 505% cheaper than 1 litre of diesel. Emissions are also cut by about 50%.
