Biafra campaigners besiege FCT court

At least 500 pro-Biafra campaigners besieged the federal capital territory magistrate court Tuesday morning, demanding the release of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).

The protesters, who converged on the venue a few minutes past 8am,‎ sang songs of solidarity and chanted, “All we are saying give us Biafra.”

They carried‎ the defunct Biafran flag and banners with the inscription “Indigenous Peoples of Biafra”.

Mobile policemen formed a wall around the protesters to forestall any breakdown of order.

However, Kanu’s lawyer, Vincent Obetta, told journalists that the court which was scheduled to rule on an application brought by‎ the Department of State Services (DSS) seeking to discontinue the case for reassignment to a higher court on Tuesday, would not sit because the judge was indisposed.

“Unfortunately the court will not be sitting owing to an act of God that has befallen the magistrate,” he said.

“We will try to pick a date. But we have not picked a date‎ because we have not been able to reach the magistrate.”

The leader of IPOB appeared at the court‎ for a first time on November 23. He is accused of charges bordering on treason and terrorism.
