Biden: Jonathan a strong example for the world

Joe Biden, the United States vice president on Tuesday phoned President Goodluck Jonathan to commend him for his leadership in ensuring the peaceful and orderly conduct of the 2015 general election.

According to a statement by the information office, public affairs section of the US embassy, Biden noted that “Jonathan’s actions to accept the results and congratulate President-elect Buhari, as well as his steps to date to ensure a successful transition, have strengthened Nigeria’s democracy and set a strong example for Africa and the world”.

“The vice president encouraged President Jonathan to remain engaged and play a leadership role in global issues after his presidency ends,” read the statement.

Biden similarly telephoned President-elect Muhammadu Buhari on April 16 to congratulate him on his victory and affirm the readiness of the United States to expand collaboration with Nigeria on issues of common concern, including economic and security matters.

“The vice-president commended President-elect Buhari for his leadership in helping to ensure the elections were conducted peacefully and urged him to continue to foster a smooth, inclusive, and peaceful transition with President Jonathan,” he was quoted as saying.

Biden also expressed the United States’ support for Nigeria’s efforts to counter Boko Haram, recover hostages held by the group, and protect civilian populations.

He also said US would “partner more closely with Nigeria to strengthen its economy”.
