Biosafety agency: We won’t risk Nigerians’ health to unsafe GM crops

The National Biosafety Management Agency says it is dedicated to ensuring the safety of human health through the deployment of modern biotechnology and regulation of genetically modified organisms and their products.

Speaking in Lagos on Monday, at a consultative meeting with seed and grain importers in Nigeria, Agnes Asagbra, NBMA director-general, said the agency will not risk the safety of the health of Nigerians to unsafe and unapproved genetically modified crops.

“We are at the forefront of integrating innovative biotechnological advancement into our agricultural practices,” she said.

“The seeds and grains you bring to our table are not just commodities, they are the result of rigorous research, dedication, and a shared vision for a sustainable future.

Asagbra said the agency saw a need to bring the participants together to sensitize them on biotechnology and safety, the activities of the agency, and the processes and procedures involved in the importation of GM seeds and grains.

“This consultative workshop is basically for seed and grain importers. We have already seen a need that the safety of our people, animals, plants, our environment is paramount,” she said.

“We want to sensitize these importers about things they need to know and what they need to clarify.”

On risk assessment of genetically engineered crops, Asagbra said crops that are not certified as safe are rejected and prevented from being imported into the country.

“At NBMA, our mandate is to make sure that these emerging technology products are safe for human, and animal health, plant life, and the environment. We make sure of these through proper science-based information and procedures,” the NBMA DG said.

“We also do risk assessments and risk management We also have what we call the National Biosafety Committee. This is a group of professionals who sit together and analyse dossiers properly.

“We also have the National Biosafety Technical Sub-commitee. These are professionals, food experts, who are always there to certify that these foods are safe.

“There are many agencies that the government has put in place to carry out these processes.”
