Blatter: I was close to death… I saw angels and the devil

Sepp Blatter, suspended FIFA president, says he was “very close to death” during his recent stay at the hospital.

Speaking in an interview in Zurich, capital of Switzerland, Blatter said he was between “the angels singing and the devil lighting the fire”.

“I was close to dying. I was between the angels who were singing and the devil who was lighting the fire, but it was the angels who sang,” he said.

“The pressure was enormous. At some stage the body just says, ‘No, enough is enough’. But if you are strong psychologically, you can resist.”

He also spoke about UEFA chief Michel Platini after Swiss prosecutors opened criminal proceedings against the pair over an alleged “disloyal” £1.3m payment received by Platini from Blatter in 2011.

Blatter said he and Platini did nothing wrong, adding that the verbal agreement on the $2 million payment, made in 2011 for work done 1998-2002, did not violate FIFA rules.

He also described Platini as “an honest man” and expressed his belief that “he will be elected” FIFA president if he is able to run for the job.
