Geidam, the headquarters town of Geidam local government area (LGA) of Yobe state, has been attacked by suspected Boko Haram insurgents.

Sources said the insurgents had been around the community since 2pm on Wednesday, and started shooting at about 6pm.

Many houses, according to sources, were set ablaze as residents ran into the bush.

Although troops from the Nigerian army and the air force arrived the area, sources said the insurgents were still shooting as of 8pm.

Geidam is about 180 kilometres from Damaturu, the Yobe capital.

In the past months, the insurgents have launched series of attacks on Yobe and Borno communities.

Sagir Musa, army’s spokesperson, did not immediately respond to a message seeking development on the attack.
