Victor Boniface scored in normal time as Bayer Leverkusen defeated VfB Stuttgart on penalties to win their first-ever German Super Cup. 

The 2024 Bundesliga champions triumphed over Stuttgart 4-3 in a penalty shootout after playing 2-2 in the regular period at the BayArena on Saturday.

Boniface scored the first goal of the game in the 11th minute. The 23-year-old tapped was at the right place and tapped home from a close range from Edmond Tapsoba’s header across the goal.

The Super Eagles striker was the team’s highest goalscorer last season despite missing months of action due to injury. He started the new season where he left a few months ago.

However, Leverkusen were pegged back just four minutes later. Enzo Millot sent a powerful shot into the net from 16 yards out and pulled Stuttgart level.

The Xabi Alonso-led team went a man down after Martin Terrier was sent off for a foul on Ermedin Demirovic.

Early in the second half, Deniz Undav made the situation worse for Leverkusen as he sent Stuttgart ahead with a brilliant finish.

Leverkusen were heading for their first loss in 52 consecutive domestic games when Patrik Schick scored in the 88th minute, dragging the match into penalties.

The trophy is Leverkusen’s fifth major title, joining the club’s lone Bundesliga shield, two German Cups, and one Uefa Cup triumph.
