The cost of the humanitarian crisis of the Boko Haram insurgency is mounting, with a fresh revelation by Kashim Shettima, the governor of Borno state, that it takes 940 bags of rice per meal to feed the internally displaced persons (IDPs).

His figure is limited to Borno state, where Maiduguri alone has 31 IDP camps.

Millions of people were displaced by the insurgency in the north-east, with camps set up across several states to provide temporary shelter for them.

Shettima said: “We have a the high number of internally displaced persons in Borno state. Most are without the basic necessities of life but we are doing all we can to help the displaced persons.

“But the government alone cannot handle it all. It’s a huge expenditure that needs well-meaning Nigerians to come and help the state.

“In Maiduguri alone, there are over 30 IDP camps, not mentioning the ones scattered all over the local government areas and even outside the state.”

President Muhammadu Buhari has promised the IDPs that they would return to their homes ahead of the new farming season in 2016.
