Bosun Tijani, minister of communications, innovation and digital economy, has been appointed to the board of trustees of the United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR).

In a post on X on Thursday, Tijani announced the appointment, adding that the invitation to join the board is a victory for Nigeria.

“I am honoured to be invited by the United Nations secretary general, António Guterres, to serve on the board of trustees of the United Nations Institute for Training and Research (@UNITAR), an autonomous institution established within the framework of the United Nations for the purpose of enhancing the effectiveness of the organisation in achieving its major objectives,” Tijani said.

“My invitation to serve on the UNITAR board is a win for Nigeria, and an acknowledgement of the giant strides made by President @officialABAT towards promoting economic and social development.”

He said the appointment validates the ministry’s efforts and achievements in capacity building and bridging the technology skills gap through initiatives such as the three million technical talent (3MTT) programme.

The minister expressed his anticipation of working with other board members to formulate principles and policies that will govern the institute’s activities and operations.

In January 2016, Rotimi Amaechi, former minister of transportation, was appointed as a member of the UNITAR board of trustees, from January 1, 2016, to December 31, 2018.
