BPL REVIEW: Five-star Spurs stun Chelsea

Harry Kane helped Tottenham to a stunning 5-3 win over London rivals Chelsea, with Danny Rose, Andros Townsend and Nacer Chadli cancelling out strikes from Diego Costa, Eden Hazard and John Terry in the Barclays Premier League (BPL) match at White Hart Lane.

Diego Costa put the Blues ahead in the 18th minute when he scored from close range after Eden Hazard’s effort had come back off the Spurs post.

Spurs equalised through Harry Kane on the half-hour mark, and Danny Rose made it 2-1 on 44 minutes.

The host went into the half-time interval 3-1 up after Andros Townsend scored from the penalty spot conceded by Gary Cahill.

Kane scored Spurs’ fourth goal seven minutes into the second half but Eden Hazard threatened a comeback for Chelsea on the hour mark when he pulled one back.

Nacer Chadli ended the game as a contest on 78 minutes when he made it 5-2 to the home team.

John Terry scored three minutes from full time for the Blues, but Spurs won the match 5-3.

Chelsea maintain their top position on the log despite the loss but Tottenham move up to fifth with 34 points, two points behind fourth-placed Southampton and a point ahead of Arsenal, who are now sixth.

At the Etihad, Manchester City edged Sunderland 3-2 to move level on points with Barclays Premier League leaders Chelsea.

City took the lead in the 57th minute when Yaya Toure slammed the ball into the top-left corner from outside the box.

Stevan Jovetic made it 2-0, but just as they had done in Sunday’s 2-2 draw with Burnley, City allowed Sunderland back into the game.

Jack Rodwell’s header reduced the tally in the 68th minute and Adam Johnson equalised from the penalty spot three minutes later after Pablo Zabaleta had fouled Santiago Vergini.

Frank Lampard headed home a cross from Gael Clichy three minutes after replacing Jovetic to win the game for the champions.

Earlier at the Britannia Stadium, Manchester United lost further momentum in the title race after drawing 1-1 with Stoke City.

Radamel Falcao equalised for the visitors in the 26th minute after Ryan Shawcross had scored the first goal of 2015 in the second minute by connecting a Peter Crouch’s header.

Southampton continued their resurgence with a 2-0 win against Arsenal at St Mary’s, where two errors from the Gunners’ goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny proved decisive.

Sadio Mane curled home from a narrow angle on the right in the 34th minute, with Dusan Tadic adding a second in the 56th minute after a defensive mix-up.

At Villa Park, Crystal Palace held Aston Villa to a goalless draw in front of new manager-elect Alan Pardew who is expected to be appointed as the successor to the sacked Neil Warnock.

Liverpool’s recent momentum was halted as they threw away a 2-0 lead to draw 2-2 at home to bottom club Leicester City.

A pair of first-half Steven Gerrard penalties put Liverpool in control, but two goals in two minutes by David Nugent and Jeffrey Schlupp prevented the Reds from securing a third successive win.

Substitute Wilfried Bony earned Swansea City a 1-1 draw at Queens Park Rangers, cancelling out Leroy Fer’s 20th-minute strike with a last-minute finish.

Two first half goals from Ahmed Elmohamady and Nikica Jelavic condemned Everton to a four straight league defeats as they lost 2-0 to Hull City at the KC Stadium.

At St James’ Park, Burnley came from behind three times to earn a 3-3 draw with Newcastle, who had John Carver in charge in the absence of Alan Pardew.

Steven Taylor’s 15th-minute header put the home side ahead, only for his team-mate Paul Dummett to score an own goal.

Jack Colback restored Newcastle’s lead with a goal from 25 yards but Danny Ings drew the away side level again with a 66th-minute glancing header.

Moussa Sissoko put the Magpies 3-2 up, and George Boyd crashed home a third Burnley equaliser with four minutes to play.

Newly appointed West Bromwich Albion manager Tony Pulis watched from the stands as his new club drew 1-1 at West Ham United.

Diafra Sakho scored his seventh goal in 11 starts for the Hammers but the Baggies responded through Saido Berahino.
