Brazil to host 2027 Women’s World Cup

The Federation of International Football Associations (FIFA) has named Brazil as the host of the 2027 Women’s World Cup.

The decision was announced after voting at the 74th FIFA Congress meeting, which was held in Bangkok, Thailand, on Friday.

Brazil’s bid was chosen over Belgium, the Netherlands, and Germany’s joint bid. In the electronic vote, 119 member associations backed the South American country, compared to 78 votes for the joint European bid. It was the first time the FIFA Congress had voted on the hosts for a Women’s World Cup; votes from the FIFA Council decided on previous hosts.

Brazil is set to become the first South American country to host the premier women’s football competition.

South Africa was among the countries initially vying for the competition hosting rights, but it pulled out in November 2023 to put together a comprehensive bid for the 2031 World Cup.

Spain is the current champion after defeating England by a lone goal in the final of the 2023 edition jointly hosted by Australia and New Zealand.

The Super Falcons of Nigeria advanced to the second round of the competition but were defeated by the eventual runners-up.

The date for the forthcoming World Cup is yet to be announced, but the structure is expected to follow the 32-team format of the last edition.
