Abe trounces PDP opponent to emerge first senator-elect in Rivers rerun

Magnus Abe, candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Rivers south-east, has been declared winner of the legislative rerun election in his district.

Onukwuisi Gideon, returning officer of the exercise, announced this on Sunday evening.

He said Abe polled a total of 125,938 votes to defeat Olaka Nwogu of  the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), who secured 25,394 votes.

Abe, a former secretary to the Rivers state government, was first elected a senator in 2011.

His reelection bid suffered a setback in 2015, but he challenged the outcome of the poll.

Both the tribunal and appeal court ordered a fresh exercise, which were marred with violence in the past, until that of Saturday.
