Musa, who was national chairman of the Peoples Redemption Party (PRP) — one of the parties that dominated the second republic — had stepped down from his position in August 2018.

In a statement to mark his 81st birthday in October 2017, President Muhammadu Buhari had said: “Balarabe Musa is one of Nigeria’s brightest stars of integrity and sterling principles.”

Shehu Sani, former senator representing Kaduna central, in a statement on the death of the elder statesman, described Musa as a man of principles who was committed in his service to humanity.

“Nigeria has lost a patriot, a revolutionary, a nationalist, a honest man and a man of principles and conviction,” Sani said.

“Balarabe Musa lived an accomplished life of honesty, simplicity and service to humanity.

“He was an exemplar for prudence, dignity and honour.

“Balarabe Musa was the best Governor that has ever presided over the affairs of Kaduna State. He was one of the few Governors and politicians released after the collapse of the second republic and declared innocent of any wrongdoing.
